Corofin have won the Connacht club title five times since 1991, and they reached another Connacht club final last Sunday afternoon when they recovered from a disastrous start to narrowly defeat Mayo champion’s Ballintubber at MacHale Park, Castlebar.

With a sell out crowd of 30,000 expected to head to Hyde Park on Sunday, there will be nowhere to hide for Mayo as they aim to dethrone Fergal O’Donnell’s defending Connacht champions on their home patch. Ten years ago O’Donnell was the man who lifted the Nestor Cup in the same venue on a sweltering Sunday evening when a late, late Gerry Lohan goal had primrose and blue ribbons hanging from the old trophy for the year at the end of one of the games of the ages.

Much of the attention last Saturday was focused on count centres from Keenagh to The Hyde Centre and many more up and down the country as results of the General Election began to unfold. Yet not even the election of Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan could have equalled the high experienced by all connected with St Brigid’s at the sound of Eddie Kinsella’s final whistle at the end of this epic All-Ireland Club Championship semi-final.

This Sunday at Tuam Stadium (2pm) Killererin will hope to finally add to their two Connacht titles won in 1976 and 1978.

Roscommon SFC final

These are busy times for all dyed-in-the wool supporters of the green and red of St Brigid’s. Last weekend the ladies team had little difficulty in capturing the senior county title at the expense of Kilglass Gaels. This weekend it’s the men’s turn to try and bring back the coveted Fahey Cup to the parish after a gap of two years. In a few weeks time the intermediate team will also contest their county final. All going well they will be hoping to complete a memorable and surely unique treble for the famous south Roscommon club.

A huge crowd is expected in Johnstown this Sunday evening at 6pm as the home side take on neighbours St Brigid’s in the quarter-final of the Roscommon SFC. The two big guns of South Roscommon football will battle it out for a place in the last four.
